By working with California’s best commercial greenhouse manufacturer, Guillaume Grapevine Nursery is set up for ongoing success. Nursery Manager Simon Delbos reported that his ATI greenhouse is ready to perform at a high-level starting next year, he said. “The plan is to grow 150,000 wine grapevines in each turn, with potentially three turns every year depending on our orders.”
Growing grapevines is a precise science and quality control is paramount. A typical day working in the greenhouse at the nursery involves either planting grapevines in small pots within the greenhouse, or sorting pots in order to select the best grapevines available after they have been growing for two weeks, Delbos explained.

The Abilities Connection has been providing voc rehab services since 1956. Most of their 300 workers-in-training focus on manufacturing and repairing air cargo nets for the US Air Force (TAC has been the prime contractor for this service since 2008). They are active in a variety of other roles – in 2010 they first established a 1,200 square foot indoor hydroponic facility then constructed a 3,000 square foot Agra Tech Solar Light 36 x 84' hydroponic greenhouse.

A multi-generation, family-run operation that grows some of the finest tomatoes in the area, Cover Produce in Tuolumne, CA recently acquired an Agra Tech greenhouse to increase their ability to grow tomatoes year-round. Today the farm operates under approximately 1.9 million square feet of plastic. After 30 years as a fire fighter in Hayward, CA, Bart Ingles, 82, retired at age 55 and moved to the rural country of Patterson, CA in Stanislaus County. He bought a little piece of land to retreat from the madness of the Bay Area, not knowing that he would eventually pursue a passion he did not know he had—growing orchids and getting them to bloom for others who were unable to do so.

With a 16-foot eave height greenhouse manufactured by Agra Tech, UC Davis is able to perform research and development on various types of crops. As a part of the Department of Plant Sciences at UC Davis in Davis, CA, the College of Agriculture and Environmental Services (CA&ES) maintains a total of 162 greenhouses, and one of their newest one is a custom-made 4,500 square-foot greenhouse made by Agra Tech.

Woods Transplants in Gustine, CA was established in 2008 and currently the farm consists of 28 acres containing 54 greenhouses and totaling 400,000 square feet of greenhouse space. The farm produces primarily tomatoes and during the off-season, they grow kale, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, celery and peppers, Woods said and everything sold is in the form of transplants. The greenhouses featured at Woods Transplants are purchased from Agra Tech, Inc. of Pittsburg, CA—one of the largest commercial greenhouse manufacturers on the west coast.

A third-generation family of farmers, McPhail Farms in Lyndon, Washington has been operating a U-Pick operation and farm stand growing and selling blueberries for many years. Seven years ago, the McPhail family began growing tomatoes in a greenhouse environment and today they produce 80,000 tomatoes annually. I literally grew up in a greenhouse and purchased my parents’ retail nursery and wholesale/retail growing operation right after graduating from college. That’s where I found my passion in growing bedding plants, native trees, shrubs and poinsettias and learned there is no substitute for getting your hands dirty and working hard. I loved the challenges the business presented; meeting greenhouse heating and cooling requirements in the extreme heat and cold of foothills weather, managing a seasonal staff, adjusting cultural variables to make sure plants were blooming or colored-up to meet the demands of our customers at holiday times. To promote our business, I developed a weekly radio show which aired for one hour every Saturday and afforded me the opportunity to interface with interesting experts in our field.

With energy costs skyrocketing, growers everywhere are looking for ways to increase energy efficiency. One of the most obvious places growers look for savings is greenhouse glazing. The knee-jerk response for most growers is to purchase “energy efficient” insulated glazing like twin-wall polycarbonate. Depending on the crop, twin-wall may be a good choice for some growers.

Infrared Films were invented in 1972 to diffuse light for faster, fuller, even crop growth. The light diffusion feature of IR films averages leaf temperature and decreases stress. The diffusers raise the thermal value and slow the loss of heat in the evening. Infrared Films were not developed to save fuel, but they do. As a Bonus, the energy savings pays for the film.

Most Nurseries use some form of integrated pest management (IPM). Basically, IPM involves pest prevention and monitoring as part of the management program. IPM aspects are control, sanitation/exclusion, environmental/cultural management and pesticide use. Pest management includes control via mechanical, cultural, biological and chemical means.
